It started late due to internet and password issues, but I am sure it will be fine next week. Everyone was present. We focused on cooking, and everyone talked a little bit about food, and some of us even presented, and we went over the tortilla casserole recipe article. Additionally, there is an issue I wanted to ask you all about. The two girls Haitian and I are grouped with are named Ai Xin Ran and Yuan Meng. They are both nice and wonderful to be around, but their English comprehension levels seem quite different. Yuan Meng’s English is very impressive and she seems to understand everything we say, but Ai Xin Ran cannot understand the articles we read. Do you guys have any ideas as to how we can solve this problem? Are there any other groups who are faced with a similar situation? Could we split the meeting in half, and dedicate one half for each girl? Is there anything we could do? Today we had our fifth meeting with the topic of sports. Everyone was present. Next time we will discuss biographies, and talk about a person of our choice. We had our weekly meeting yesterday at 9 PM EST. History, Animal, Fitness, and Cooking.
We went through Busy, Busy Bees. I corrected Bella’s pronunciation. Rose didn’t get a chance to prepare, so I will let her read the passage and send it to me on WeChat. I showed them a powerpoint about bees. We then got to talk about our experiences with bees. The next one will be about “Moon Mystery”. However, there is an error with the document — it has the wrong passage in the folder, and Maria will fix it. Today, Leran led the group. We first went over and corrected Rose’s pronunciation on the previous passage, Busy-Busy-Bees. Then we mainly went over the current passage, Moon Mystery–first by listening to and correcting Rose and Bella’s reading, and then discussing and answering the questions regarding the passage. The next passage will be Blocking Water. My team finished our passage early today. Everyone comprehended the passage very well, we had little to no corrections throughout the entire passage. We also understood the questions well today. We were able to talk about the difference between first and third point of views. We decided on doing River Dolphins as our next passage next week. Also, when I open the Rive Dolphins pdf, it shows me a document about coins and change. Can you please send me the pdf of it before next Wednesday please. Or should my group pick a different topic? Have a great week! Last night, there was a ZOOM meeting on the passage “Catching a Wave”. Leran was the leader. We listened to Bella and Rose read that passage, and then let them do the Questions that follow it. Leran recorded Bella’s words on WeChat last night. I will upload Rose’s words later today. The next passage we will read will be “Water Giants” Yesterday we already finished the Watery Giants passage. Now we finished all of the Natural Sciences. The next passage will be the “River Dolphins” passage, which is Sea Life. This meeting was only about 25 minutes long, as we didn’t have to do much with this passage today. Leran was the leader today. We first listened to Bella and Rose reading the passage: “River Dolphins”. I worked on correcting Bella’s pronunciation, while Leran corrected Rose’s pronunciation. We then answered the questions that follow the passage.
The next passage we will read is “Cooking Up a Tasty Cinco de Mayo”

Team 14 徐少丹 (Kevin Xu) Danielle’s team has decided on the following topics: History, Animal, Cooking, Sports, Sea Life, Natural Science, Bird, and School Life. Danielle’s team has also decided on doing the topic History next week and the passage “The Eight Wonder of the World” next week. For Danielle’s team performance today, she felt like they all did really well. Everyone contributed to her decisions and everyone learned something new about each other today. Danielle did make clarifications on some pronunciations but besides for that everything ran smoothly. My team did not finish answering the questions to our passage “The Eighth Wonder of the World”. We had a bit of trouble with some syllable pronunciations and more complicated word meanings. We helped clarify by breaking the word apart into syllables. We also had some trouble with the main idea, some of us gave more general ideas, but after discussing it with one another we decided on a statement that covered everything. We will be continuing this passage into the next meeting. We will have the same meeting time. Have a great rest of your day! We started by reading the passage Power of the Cat. When we finished the questions, we still had 30 minutes left. We spent the rest of the time finishing the questions we didn’t finish last time. Today, we talked about the passage “Blocking Water”. First, I listened to them read. Then, I let them answer the questions about the passage. The next passage we will do is “Catching a Wave”. I also recorded and took notes about their pronunciations. I put the correct ones on WeChat so they can practice. My team finished our passage early today. Everyone participated and we answered all the questions together. We cleared up some pronunciations and had some problem with chronological order but besides for those two things, everything ran smoothly today. We decided to do the passage Garden Gourmet in the topic Cooking next week. I hope you have a great rest of your day! My team finished the passage before half of the time today. Everyone was able read the passage pretty easily except for one or two more complicated words. We all agreed on the answers to the passage without disagreements and finished reading an extra passage. We agreed to do the topic birds and the passage It’s a Bird’s Life next week.
Team 15 徐少丹 (Kevin Xu) When we started this session at 9 p.m., we struggled to learn Zoom for ten minutes, but eventually moved on to use WeChat. We understand how to use Zoom now so it won’t be an issue in future sessions. 王雪多格 seemed to experience technical difficulties in the way that it seemed she wasn’t in the WeChat group call but she claims otherwise. Hopefully, we’ll have a full attendance next session so we can get to know 王雪多格 better. Due to the fact that we forgot to go over the 8 sections of study material, we will be going over that either before or during the next session. We played icebreakers this time such as Would You Rather and Two Truths One Lie. I believe that we know each other a lot better after these 40 minutes. We started our Zoom session at 9 p.m, with a few technical difficulties but we managed to fix it. All four members joined the call, however, one group member’s mic had not seemed to be working so we suggested they type in the chat. We picked our eight topics for our following meetings because we forgot about it last meeting. We all agreed on: History, School Life, Social Studies, Animal, Fitness, Natural Science, Sea Life, and Sports. This meeting chose to do History, and we read one of the articles about pyramids on the study materials. We let the Wuhan students answer the questions that came with it and we helped with any questions they had. We started our Zoom meeting at 9 p.m., but none of the Wuhan students were able to join so we had to postpone it to 9 a.m. the next morning. Me, Zhouying, and 吴小涵 joined the group call. However, after ten minutes 王雪多格 still hadn’t joined so we decided to continue without her. In this session, we discussed and summarized the three passages from school life. Together, we read out loud the articles about a book fair, an art class, and an academic quiz show. We had our zoom meeting this week at 9 a.m on Sunday. We were short one person again from our group who we hope will be able to join us our next meeting. Today we went over the topic Biography and we read the three articles/stories that came with it. We took turns reading the passages and we encouraged the Wuhan student to give us a summary of each story. We helped her learn how to expand more in detail in her summaries. We had extra time left over so we went over any questions that 吴小涵 had for us and we answered her question about definitions of words she wasn’t familiar with, for example, career
Team 16 Aurora Zheng Aurora Zheng Sat. 9-10 PM Introduced ourselves and picked the topics: Animals, cooking, sealife, sports, school life, natural science, history and poetry. Went over the article, “Cats, cats, cats,”. Everyone was there. Next class, we will be going over “Plenty of Pancakes”. We went over “Plenty of pancakes”. It was a little rough because the connection was bad, and people kept disconnecting, so we moved to a Wechat call. However, the connection was still very bad. We finished going over some questions and ended the call. We went over the passage, “Sports Summer”, and went over pronounciation and meanings of some words. Then, we answered questions in the Vocabulary skills section. I made them repeat each vocabulary word after me. At the end, I assigned the reading skills portion as homework. We went over the reading questions hw from last class, and then began reading “Art school”. After that, we went and answered the rest of the questions We went over a history passage, and assigned the questions for homework. They had a bit more difficulty reading the passage, so we spent more time going over words and their definitions. We went over the passages in poems, worked on the questions, and learned about our country’s more well known poems and poets   I think it was a really good opportunity to get to know more about each other’s cultures. We got to work on some of their pronunciations and vocabulary. I kinda went both ways, since they also helped me pronounce chinese words right. Some of the things learned about their culture, were like famous poets and their poems from china

and so did Richard. I told them for each paragraph they read, they have to state the main idea for each
paragraph, and they have to answer vocabulary questions. For some paragraphs, Rainer had some

paragraph, and they have to answer vocabulary questions. For some paragraphs, Rainer and Richard had

main idea of the passage. We talked about our daily lives and dams we visited. Oh, and there was a
visitor, Richard’s friend. She was silent for the whole time, but she was an observer.
Overall, my experience teaching Rainer and Richard about English was a pleasurable one. They
were very focused on understanding the reading passage, yet they were mature enough to participate in
our discussions about the article and the ones about our lives. They had some pronunciation issues
during the first few weeks, but after a few sessions, they were able to pronounce almost all of the words
correctly. Their ELA comprehension has significantly improved. During the first few classes, they had
trouble telling us the main idea of some paragraphs, but the last few sessions they knew a lot more
about what the main idea of the passage was. Another significant improvement they have developed
was that their vocabulary has be expanded tenfold. Before, they didn’t know 25% of the words in the
article, but after a while, that percentage has been shrunken to virtually nothing. So overall, this
experience is very soothing and I would love to do this again.
Team 20 Take turns being captain Benjamin Li Sunday March 15th (EST 8:00 AM) Group 20 read and discussed By the Light of the Moon. Three people were present, Michelle Zhu, Michelle Yang, and Ruby Chen. To start with, the two Michelles read the passage and then translated it into Chinese. Subsequently, Ruby asked questions about the parts of the passage where she was confused. At this point, we talked for around 10 minutes about school, comparing American schools to Chinese schools. To conclude, we discussed when we would meet for the next meeting, as well as what passage we would read next. Group 20, on March 22th (EST 8:00 AM), read and discussed Cats Cats Cats. All four people were present, Michelle Zhu, Michelle Yang, Candy, and Ruby. However, Ruby’s network bandwidth was low, and we assumed she could not talk but could hear us most of the conversation. Instead of the two Michelles reading the entire passage and then translating it into Chinese, this week, we read (in English) one paragraph at a time. After every paragraph, we would explain and Candy would ask questions about the vocab, or about the passage in general. Then, we again talked for around 15 minutes about our schools, comparing American schools to Chinese schools and discussing our schedules. To conclude, we discussed when we would meet for the next meeting. Furthermore, we decided that we would alternate team captains, and Candy would be our next team captain. Our meeting ended at EST 9:20 AM. Team 21 Ashley Wang Benjamin Li Friday 9-10 EST We Introduced ourselves and went over the article “Playball”. We each took turns reading one sentence of the story then went over the given question on the attached file. One of our group members did not participate. For our second session on Saturday (US Eastern Time), we continued reading the articles provided in the files. We asked them to read “Plenty of Pancakes” and went over every individual word that they were unfamiliar with or struggled to pronounce. We then completed all the questions for the “Plenty of Pancakes” passage. One of our members did not attend. This week, we started reading “A Garden in the Clouds” and went over any unfamiliar words afterwords. We then answered the given questions attached to the article. Next week, we will choose a new story to read and analyze. One of out team members did not attend. In last lesson, we choose the article “What’s cooking” and read over the story. We then answered the questions attached to the reading as well as go over some unfamiliar words. As a group, we started reading a new article, “It’s a Bird’s Life”, and went over any unfamiliar words afterwords. One by one, we defined them and explained each term. We then answered the questions and reviewed each individual paragraphs before ending.

Since Day 1, all of our group members have been able to challenge ourselves as far as communicating and expressing our ideas in a second language. Every Sunday, our zoom session started at 9:00 and would last approximately 1 hour. During that period, each member from China would take turns reading a chosen article, which we would then go over to analyze and explain any unfamiliar words. During the first couple of weeks, one of our members did not participate, however, both greatly improved their English skills as far is communicating, reading, and so forth.

During the first meeting, we introduced ourselves and choose to begin reading a level 5 article and answering the questions attached to the file. It started off a bit rocky and none of us was familiar with the format of using Zoom to communicate with others from around the globe, but we quickly got the hand of it. The following meeting was a reflection of the first, except with a different article. We asked them to read “Plenty of Pancakes” and went over every individual word that they were unfamiliar with or struggled to pronounce. The paper taught us the exact instruction to make a pancake and incorporated the necessary ingredients and some tips for the readers. The next week, our group choose to advance to a level 6 article entitles “A Garden in the Clouds”, which emphasized the importance of trees in our community, and we then continued to explain the story and answer the questions. We choose a similar article during the third week under the same theme and answered the questions after reading over the story “What’s cooking”. Each team member from china took turns reading every paragraph and explain each individual term.

The next week, we started off reading a new article “It’s a Birds’ Life”, as usual, which narrated the discoveries made by Charles Darwin during his time on the Gilopocos islands and uncovered the importance of his finding on society from then to now. The following Sunday, we discussed the current events, such as the coronavirus and activities we have been up to during quarantine. We then choose an article under the “Money” category and began to read and understand the information. After reading “Money Matter”, we developed a gradual understanding of the value of money and its history as well as answer the question provided afterwords. During the last meeting, we compared schools in China versus schools in the U.S. and discussed the current events. Overall, each one of our group members definitely gained something from this experience and walked away with something new.

Team 22 Monica Lu Aurora Zheng Sat. 8:30-9:30 AM First thirty minutes were ice breakers (introduced themselves) However, connections weren’t very stable for Chinese teammates, and they were a bit shy, so they encouraged them to talk and go straight to the articles.
The last 30 minutes they discussed: Soccer Summer(sports level 4) It’s a pretty easy article for the teammates so they get it over with easily and quickly. Cat,Cat,Cat(Animals level 5) They think this article is hard so they just get through the first three paragraphs.
HW: read through cat*3 and finish the exercises if have time.
We will be discussing about cat*3 next week and reviewing the sports article. Since they think Cat*3 is hard they will discuss this article slowly, and we will be choosing articles that are either level 4 or level 5.
They finished cat*3 article since two teammates had already finished the exercises of the article. They have a really good understanding of the article, so they go over the rest of article and exercises in the first thirty minutes. Then, they move on to a new article(9 Natural Science-Desert in Bloom), and have four paragraphs left. Next class they will go over the new article and exercises, and pick a level 5 article. 1. First forty minutes: We continued to discuss about the article “desert in blossom”, and we finished it. Every teammates is fully engaged. 2. Last Twenty minutes: We start a new article “Cooking up”. We just go through the first few paragraphs. We will finish it next week. 3. Next time we will have 15-20 minutes free-talking time to help the teammates improve on speaking. 1. (First forty min.) We finished the article: cooking up. We also finished the exercises. 2. According to teammates’ parents, we add some times doing free-talking(chatting)on daily lives, books we preferred, and hobbies. 3. Next time we will start to talk about a new article, and also we will do the chatting session. na na
Team 23 Annabelle Yang Aurora Zheng Fri. 9 PM Introduced themselves, and then planned out hw for next few days. Planned to start with Garden unit and assess the level of difficulty for the students. One of the group members did not show up, so her sister joined and took lead. They read “By the Light of the Moon” out loud together and discussed the main ideas, vocabulary, and grammar. They also generally discussed gardens and farms, and did a quick in-class writing exercise that Danika and Annabelle will be correcting and giving feedback on at their next class. Next week, they will move forward with the biographies lesson. Discussed subject-verb agreement and using the correct tenses when we write. We also read “Quick Feet and a Big Heart” together, and discussed using context clues when we read and figuring out how to pronounce words when we read out loud. We also explored the suffix “able” and example sentences with words ending in “able” This week, we discussed poetry. We talked about how we feel about poetry and what subjects we want to write poems about. We also added new words to our vocabulary, like “diversity” and “audience,” and strategies for reading comprehension (like always supporting our answers with evidence from the text). Additionally, we discussed about the difference between facts and opinions, and subjective and objective perspectives. team 23 discussed “Water Giants”, from the Natural Science unit. We learned about sentence structure with subjects, verbs, objects, and modifiers, as well as new vocabulary words like “tsunami” and “period”. We talked about how to break down big words, like “approaching” and “disturbances” as we are reading in order to figure out how to pronounce them, and we discussed what makes “Water Giants” an informational text rather than a biography or fiction. For homework, we wrote short paragraphs on natural phenomena that interest us, and Danika and I will provide feedback on those pieces before our next lesson. Next week, we will move forward with the Sea Life unit. We learned about pink river dolphins and practiced forming and discussing our own opinions about a text. We also really got into the more difficult vocabulary of this week’s reading (words like “vertebrae”, “fused”, and flexibility”), and practiced describing things. For our homework, we will continue that practice by writing a descriptive paragraph as we prepare for our next unit about birds. As a recap, remember that during our last meeting we talked about birds and learned about John James Audubon, for whom the National Audubon Society is named (and if you want to explore more about them, you can check out their bird guide at https://www.audubon.org/bird-guide). We learned new vocabulary words, like conservation (n, protecting our environment), excursion (n, a trip), and original (adj or n, the first of something).

We also discussed figurative language briefly, because it was mentioned in last week’s homework. To refresh your memory: figurative language is the language we use to describe things more vividly (remember vivid was one of our vocabulary words a couple weeks ago, and means that something is rich, or bright). Basically, it means that it makes our writing and reading more interesting. Some types of figurative language include

Hyperbole, which is an exaggerated statement: I am so hungry, I could eat a horse (instead of just saying you’re really hungry)
Simile, which compares two things using the words “like” or “as” : Her teeth are as white as snow. Her teeth are like pearls (instead of just saying she has very white teeth)
Metaphor, which compares two things by saying one thing is another thing: The classroom was a zoo (to indicate that the classroom was wild – the students probably were very ill-behaved, unlike you guys!)

Tried out the reading difficulty of each level and chose the first article as well as the topics for the next few weeks. U.S. students read aloud while Chinese students read along silently to understand the article. Read the passage “Career day”, read it out loud to the students a few times, then defined unknown words, and the students asked questions on anything they were confused about. In the end, everyone took turns reading the passage together. Read the story: “Cooking up a Tasty Cinco de Mayo.” Read it outloud to the students while they followed along, talked about its summary and did the questions on the back. Decided on a new strategy of reading: to choose an article a few days before the group meeting, everyone will read it and think about their own opinions on the article, then everyone can share and discuss it during the meeting. First reviewed what was learned last meeting. Read the article “Soccer Summer” and went over a summary of each paragraph. Did a role play twice and then talked about personal summer camp experiences. Decided on an article to read for next week. Reviewed a little about what was read last time and then started on new article. Read silently on the article, then asked and answered questions. Went over last weeks homework which was to finish the questions related to the article “A Slice of Sea Island,” and started reading the article “Cooking Up” as a group this week. This week, we assigned them some homework which was to finish reading the article “Cooking Up” and answer the questions and then preview next class’s article, “Poetry Slam.” Reviewed answers for last week’s homework for the article “Cooking Up” and finished reading the article “Poetry Slam” as a group, making sure the students weren’t unsure about any parts of the article. The article seemed a bit easy so planning to try a level 6 next week. Assigned the students some homework which was to answer the questions for “Poetry Slam” and then preview next class’s article, “It Is All Academy.” Reviewed answers for last week’s homework “Poetry Slam” and previewed next week’s article “It’s All Academy.”Chatted a bit like in English for practice and for fun at the start, but not everyone could join in because of internet and microphone issues. Came up with the idea that towards the end of the “semester” to help the students write their own article and questions and to go over. Went over last weeks homework and finished going over next week’s article (Play Ball). Learned a bit about each other when talking about the sports that each played to lead into the “Play Ball” article. Went over last weeks homework and finished going over next week’s article, “Money in the Bank.” For homework, they were assigned to complete the questions for the article “Dessert in Bloom.” Next week, we’ll start the in class project where they will try to write their own article. Went over last weeks homework and finished going over next week’s article (Dessert in Bloom) and are to finish the questions. Plan to read their articles that they wrote themselves next week. Went over “A Dessert in Bloom” questions and read Deer’s article that she had to write herself and answered the questions that she wrote to go along with her articles. It was surprisingly well written, grammatically correct, well formatted, and fluid. There were a few spots that were iffy, but they were minor mistakes. But we ran out of time to read Luellen’s article.
